French Tour de France cycling race won by Carlos Sastre

Carlos SastreSpanish cyclist Carlos Sastre has won the Tour de France and he is the third rider from his country who has done this in three years.

33-year-old Sastre was already in the lead the lead from Saturday’s time trial but he won by 58 seconds.

Australia’s Cadel Evans was in second position and Austrian cyclist Bernhard Kohl came third.

Sastre enjoyed the final part of the race as it went into Paris knowing he was going to win.

It is traditional in the Tour de France for other riders not to threaten the leader’s position on the final stage.

Sastre had claimed the yellow jersey when he successfully pushed forward into the lead at the foot of the race’s final mountain climb, and crossed the Alpe d’Huez finish line two minutes and 15 seconds ahead of Evans.

Sastre’s overall lead of 94 seconds got him on top in Saturday’s time trial where Evans failed to produce the required time.

After the race a proud Carlos Sastre said: “I’ve dreamt of this since I was a child.”
