The Beautiful Bayeux Tapestry – A Work of Art from the 11th Century

Bayeux Tapestry

Bayeux Tapestry

The famous and very beautiful Bayeux tapestry is kept on display in Normandy and of course in the town of Bayeux. Not very much is known about the origins of this amazing work. The first record of it describes it as a ‘very long and narrow hanging’ and this was written in 1476, but the tapestry itself dates much further back in time, to 1070. It is believed to have been commissioned by one of the bishops of the time. His name was Bishop Odo of Bayeux and it just so happens that he was the half brother to William the Conqueror.

What was referred to back in the 15th century as a ‘long tapestry’ is quite right as it measures over 70 metres. It is not really a tapestry at all as it is an embroidery which is stitched not actually woven. There are many historians who would argue that it was made in Kent but then this is still a matter for debate. The original is kept in Bayeux but there is a replica of it that was made by Elizabeth Wardle. This replica tapestry is on display in the UK, in Reading. The reason for it having been expertly copied and embroidered was that England should have one of their own.

For a very long time the olive has been the symbol of many regions in southern France and in particular Landuedoc where the precious charismatic olive tree has flourished for centuries. The climate in this region is perfect with very long and very hot, dry summers. The winters are mild making it the idyllic place for olive trees to thrive and do so exceptionally well.

There are thousands of hectares of beautifully tended olive groves throughout this gorgeous Mediterranean region of France. For centuries people have been attracted to the area for many reasons which is hardly surprising as it is so exquisite to travel to, through as well as around.

Wonderful Weekly Markets in France

Market in Niece

There is one thing I adore about France and that’s the weekly markets held in many of the small towns dotted around the country. It really doesn’t matter what region you happen to be in, there will be a market where locally grown produce is sold and you can be certain the quality of this produce is supremely good.

Provence is a region I love to visit during the warm summer months and I spend much of my time exploring the area. There is just so much to do and see but at weekends I set aside the mornings to visit local markets and this means strolling around food markets as well as the wonderful flea markets found in the areas I like to explore.
