France Weather

The weather in France can vary enormously so it’s impossible to give a single French weather forecast; not only does the weather in France vary from east to west and north to south but one also has to take into consideration the mountainous areas which have such a large influence on the French weather.

There are four different types of climate in France. In the west of France there is a temperate maritime climate near the coasts giving mild wet winters and cool summers with quite frequent bouts of rainfall or misty, foggy conditions. The climate in central France is a continental climate with longer, hotter summers and colder winters but with less rainfall than the coastal areas.

A Mediterranean type of climate is found along a strip from Perpignan through Montpellier and Marseille up to Nice) about 20 to 60 km (12 to 35 miles) wide along the Mediterranean coast of France. Here the French weather is hot, dry summers, mild and humid winters, with just a few rainy days during the year. Marseille for example has just 60 days of rain on average during the year, and the sun shines for more than 3,000 hours each year.

The fourth type of weather if France is the mountain climate where temperatures are influenced mainly by altitude, and winters are generally bitterly cold and prolonged. As with any mountainous region precipitation increases with elevation and occurs in the form of snow in winter, many villages in the high valleys receiving more than 50 days of snow each year.
