Since 1st January 1997, it is no longer obligatory for UK nationals to exchange their British driving licence for a French one.

After 6 months in France, it is necessary to register private foreign vehicles. Applications can be made at the local ‘Préfécture’. Among other documents, an export certificate is needed from the DVLA if the vehicle is registered in the UK.

Other documents (as well as the Export certificate from the DVLA) needed to register a car are:
- Passport
- Proof of residence
- Logbook
- VAT Certificate
- French MOT

When driving in France you must always carry with you:
- Your driving licence
- Carte Gris (to prove you own the car)
- Carte Verte (Insurance Certificate)
