Post subject: qui v. que |

Bonjour a tout le monde,
Can you explain to me the difference between "qui" and "que" please?
For example,
Would you say qui/que in this case?
"J'adore le livre qui/que sur la table"=I have a book that/which is on the table.
Je pense que..........=I think that........
J'ai un frere qui il /qu'il a........ans=I have a brother whom/that is.........
Does one always use "que" after a verb and "qui" if there is not a verb in front of it?
Merci beaucoup

It's rather easy (this time).
Qui is used when it's the subject. Que is used when it's a complement.
A tiny exemple :
The book that is on the table
Le livre qui est sur la table...
What is on the talbe ? that : it's subject !
The book that i read.
Le livre que je lis.
Who's reading ? I
What am i reading ? That => it's complement (and direct one) => que
You can also have an indirect complement
The girl who i gave the book... (i'm not sure it's correct in English)
La fille ŕ qui j'ai donné le livre.
subject : i => j'
direct object : the book => le livre
indirect object : who => ŕ qui.
Does it seem clear ? _________________ Semper Fidelem |

Yes, now I understand it.
Thank you very much
The girl who i gave the book... (i'm not sure it's correct in English)
It's almost correct. The correct way of saying this would be "The girl that I gave the book to."
