| I'm from South Africa and I want to live in France for 6 months for my pets to qualify for a UK Pet Passport. Would it be a viable proposition financially, as I am a pensioner? How does one find long let accommodation? |

Hi Diane....
First be welcome on this forum, it's always pleasure finding new member.
I'm not sure having well understood your question (don't worry it's my fault). You're planning to come in France for six monthes as pensioner (does it means like living in hotel and eating in its restorant ?) ; It would be rather costly, even in the cheapiest part of France (not in Paris or by French riviera for instance). But well it depends too what you call expensive or not.
in fact i can't see the aim of the trip... Could you explain me one more time (with other words or explanation of them ).
Cheers,

Hi Markus
Lovely to hear from you.
I want to live in France for 6 months with my dogs. I cannot take them to the UK because of quarantine restrictions, but if I live in France for 6 months, I can get health certificates which will allow me to go to England.
I can see the problem with the English word Pension, and forgive me, I forget the French equivalent word. I mean that I have retired from my job and will get only a monthly amount to live on from my old employer. So I know I will not have money to live in a hotel or eat in restaurants. I would like to find a room in the country where I can live quietly and cook for myself.
I hope this explains my problem more clearly.
Thanks for your help

Hi Diane,
Oki, it's perfectly clear now
I think your situation greatly depends on where you'd like to live in France : there are cities (well hum, not the great ones) that are rather cheap. But you'll need at least 700€ / month to live honestly (just for food -400- and rent a flat not realy big -300- ). But in greater cities (Paris, Nice, Marseille ...) this cost wil be greatly increased because of the renting somewhere to live. For exemple, i had a realy tiny flat in Lyon that cost 450€/month.
Nevertheless, you'll need to visit some to find out one to rent (i don't know anyone who rent somewhere without visiting it before). May be you could find some to rent only by internet... but i'd not bet, although if you're looking for something in countryside.
Please excuse my mistake with the word pension (in French 'retraite') as in French, a 'pension' is a hotel where breakfist, lunch and dinner are included. Not a true friend that word...
Does it answear partly your answear ?
Friendly,

Thanks Markus.
I really appreciate your taking the time to reply.
Yes, now I'm getting some idea of what it will cost me to live in France. I know it will be difficult to find accommodation because most of the internet sites are for holiday homes which are very expensive.
But I will keep trying.
Merci
