Don't stay with foreigners... It's rather difficult at the beginings as French are not so welcoming, but, after a few time, you'll see they're truly enjoying... sometimes.
It also depends on where you'll be.

If you cannot afford the services of a renowned linguistics tutor, your ideal option would be to consider buying do-it-yourself language courses, followed by practical experience with native speakers. If you have French friends, this will be a lot easier pour vous-- not everyone in France will have the patience to educate the English foreigner on idioms and whatnot.
But if you find that these courses are not particularly engaging enough for you, in addition to reading and writing difficulties, then try out Michael Thomas.
The key to language learning is to make it fun and versatile while not being afraid to make errors here and there. |

there are many ways to learn french if you are really eager, there are websites that offers to teach the french language and there are a lot of books offering the same service.
But I guess it really is much effective to learn from a certain school or a certain tutor, and practising it on a french community. |

Hi,
I am French, and I sometines think about foreigners who are learning to speak my language... it must be very difficult ! But I think it's worth it ! For a very long time, French was the language used by politics in many countries when they were meeting together, it changed after the WW1.
But German is even more difficult. For us French, it is easy to learn English, and Spanish. German is quite hard.
Here are the mains hard points with French, to my opinion:
- in English, to describe a thing, you say: "the ...". In French, a thing can have two genders (like men and women).
You say "the car", and "the dog", but we say "LA voiture" (the car), adn "LE chien" (the dog). Car is female, dog is female. And for each word you will have to learn it...
- we have far more "times". You only have preterit, past perfect, present perfect, futur.... we have at least 10. And you say:
"I drive, you drive, he/she drives, we drive, you drive, they drive" (it's always drive), whereas we say "je conduis, tu conduis, il/elle conduit, nous conduisons, vous conduisez, ils/elles conduisent".
So if you start learning French, good luck ! |

Hey,
First of all, I think it´s really great that you are moving to france to study French! I also studied a semester in France to learn the language. To really improve your French, I suggest immersing yourself in the language as much as you can... watch tv/movies in French, listen to French radio, try reading the newspaper, etc. Even if you don´t understand it all, you will begin to get a better ear for it. What helped a lot for me was making local friends, even if this seems intimidating at first. My vocabularly improved drastically and of course so did my knowlege of French slang
Bonne chance!! |
