Holders of a ‘carte de séjour’ are entitled to claim the ‘Revenu Minimum d’Insertion’, or RMI, which is equivalent to Income Support in the UK.
People who have been claiming unemployment benefit in the UK for a minimum of four weeks can continue to receive it whilst looking for work in France (up to a maximum of 3 months). Those who wish to do so must advise the unemployment office where they are claiming the benefit at least 5 working days before moving to France. An E303 form will be sent to them and should be taken to the local ANPE office in France within 7 days of arrival.
Whilst working in France, a family allowance is available for a second child, from birth until they are 20. For more information contact the local ‘Caisse des Allocations Familiales.
Workers in France pay contributions to the French State Pension scheme. To receive the pension, at 60, contact the ‘Caisse Nationale d’Assurance Vieillesse, or CNAV.
