Hurricane Dean hits Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Mexico
Jamaica has been severely hit by Hurricane Dean, with winds up to 145mph (230km/h) and torrential rain as the storm passed over the island and since then it has laid course for the Cayman Islands and Mexico.
Hurricane Dean has been categorized as Category Four storm force but the MoD said that the Cayman Islands did not suffer any significant damage from it. However, Hurricane Dean has already claimed at least six lives in the eastern Caribbean and trees were uprooted and roofs ripped off houses in southern Jamaica.
Cancun and other tourist resorts in Mexico were spared a direct hit by Hurricane Dean as it came ashore at 0330 (0830 GMT) about 40 miles (65km) north-east of Chetumal, and hit theYucatan Peninsula near the border with Belize. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Florida said the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize as well as Guatemala and northern Honduras could all expect very heavy rainfall, together with flash floods and landslides caused by this extreme weather.
