Factory records boss Tony “Mr Manchester” Wilson dies
Founder of Factory records and music mogul Anthony Wilson, who was also known as “Mr Manchester,” because he had discovered some of the most famous bands from the city, has died on Friday evening at the Christie Hospital surrounded by family. Anthony Wilson was 57.

Anthony Wilson was a record label owner, a radio presenter, a TV show host, a nightclub manager, an impresario and journalist for Granada Television and the BBC, and was behind the success of New Order and the Happy Mondays, but he had recently been suffering from kidney cancer.

Music mogul Anthony WilsonAnthony Wilson, who was also well known for setting up the Hacienda nightclub, had emergency surgery in January to remove a diseased kidney.

He had been recommended the drug Sutent after chemotherapy had failed to get rid of the cancer, but the NHS refused to fund the £3,500-a-month cost of the treatment. Members of the Happy Mondays rock group, together with other acts he supported over the years, however, started a fund to help pay for his care.

Phil Saxe, who used to work alongside Anthony Wilson at Factory Records said in tribute: "Part of me, part of Manchester, part of modern British music has died tonight."
