The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported no problems from any of the recalled toys, although before the initial recall, three children needed medical treatment after swallowing more than one of the small magnets. CPSC said the danger was because "if more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal."
Chinese-made Sarge toys from the Pixar film Cars have also been recalled because lead has been discovered in the paintwork.
253,000 Sarge toy cars have been recalled in America and 183,000 from elsewhere in the world, with 49,000 of the suspect toys from the UK and Ireland.
Mattel blamed the amount of lead in the paint on a Chinese sub-contractor called Hong Li Da who had been using paint from unauthorised suppliers.
