Nicolas Sarkozy welcomes Libyan arms deal probe
Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of France, welcomes an investigation to see if an arms deal was offered to Libya in exchange for six Bulgarian medics being released.

Nicolas Sarkozy's office has issued a statement to that effect, following Nicolas Sarkozy’s departure for his summer holidays in America.

French President Nicolas SarkozyThe arms contract between France and Libya valued at $405m (£199m) had caused suspicion in France and in the media, especially after it was made public just one week after the six medics, imprisoned in Libya for eight years, were let go.

France's opposition socialist party has launched an investigation, which will examine the details of negotiations between France and Libya.

The defence minister for France, Herve Morin, said that the deal had been in the pipeline for months and that after an arms embargo had been lifted, France had become one of several countries in talks with Libya.
