Nicolas Sarkozy of France signs agreements with Libya
Following successful talks, the leaders of France and Libya, Nicolas Sarkozy and Muammar Gaddafi have signed agreements on issues ranging from security and health care to immigration.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy met with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in Tripoli a day after six Bulgarian medics who had been previously convicted of deliberately infecting Libyan children with HIV had been released.

Nicolas SarkozyNicolas Sarkozy and Muammar Gaddafi also agreed to work on a nuclear energy project for turning seawater into fresh drinking water.

The meeting between Nicolas Sarkozy and Muammar Gaddafi is considered as a sign of the normalisation of the relationship between Libya and the EU after the medics' release.

The EU and the United States had both told Muammar Gaddafi that resolving the matter of the medics was important to improving relations between the countries.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also is reported to have said she hoped to visit Libya soon and to have hinted that US investment in Libya could increase.

Nicolas Sarkozy is the first European head of state to visit Libya since the release of the six medics.
