French President Nicolas Sarkozy to meet Libyan leader
President of France Nicolas Sarkozy is on his way to Tripoli to meet with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and his visit comes just a day after the release of six foreign medics who had been held for years for infecting children with the HIV virus.

The meeting between the two leaders is being viewed as a sign of Libya and the EU improving their relationship following the release.

Muammar GaddafiThe six medics were made up of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian-born doctor and they all maintained their innocence. All six served eight years of their life sentences but have been pardoned on their arrival in Sofia by Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.

Nicolas Sarkozy has said he wants to curb the flow of illegal immigrants crossing into southern Europe from North Africa. Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and Immigration Minister Brice Hortefeux will accompany him on his mission.

Libyan Foreign Minister, Abdullah Shalqam, said that Nicolas Sarkozy's visit would provide a chance to discuss his proposal for a Mediterranean union.
