
About 8,400 evacuees have been moved to special camps away from the volcano but scientists are nevertheless warning that lava could reach them if there is a large enough eruption.
The scientists have also advised residents to wear facemasks to protect themselves from the volcanic ash clouds.
Mt Gamkonora is the highest peak on the island of Halmahera , some 2,400km east of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, and is one of at least 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is part of the Asia-Pacific "Ring of Fire."
It is reported that about 2,000 people are said to have chosen to stay within the 8km (five mile) danger zone that has been established.
Saut Simatupang of Indonesia's Vulcanological Survey team said there had been less smoke and ash on Tuesday "but that does not mean the volcano is safe".
