Pop singer Avril Lavigne denies Rubinoos’ lyrics theft
Canadian pop singer Avril Lavigne, 22, has denied that she violated copyright by copying lyrics from a song by 1970s new wave rock band The Rubinoos.

Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer of The Rubinoos claim that Avril Lavigne's recent hit single Girlfriend had copied their 1979 song I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend, and the songwriters have taken legal action against Avril Lavigne in a US District Court in San Francisco.

Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer of The Rubinoos claim that "the lyric, the meter, the rhythm" of Avril Lavigne’s song were the same as in their tune, but Avril Lavigne responded: "Simply put, I have been falsely accused of ripping their song off."

Avril Lavigne added that the lyrics of Girlfriend could easily be compared to several other hit records.

The Rubinoos once had a hit with a cover version of Tommy James and the Shondells' I Think We're Alone Now, whilst Avril Lavigne recently won the award for favourite Canadian artist at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto.

The songs she mentions as being comparable to hers (the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and the Stones' "Get Off of My Cloud")just so happen to be the same ones that were mentioned in 1979 when magazines were raving about the Rubinoos' song. Weird, huh?
