French President Nicolas Sarkozy to meet EU ministers
French President Nicolas Sarkozy is about to meet with European finance ministers and will be asking the European Union (EU) to bend its fiscal rules to help prevent an economic slowdown in France.

Nicolas Sarkozy’s meeting with the ministers will mark the first time a French head of state has attended such a ministerial gathering since Silvio Berlusconi went to defend Italy's budget back in 2004.

French President Nicolas SarkozyNicolas Sarkozy is hoping to cut French taxes, but this would mean that France would breach a 3% budget deficit rule already set by the EU.

Nicolas Sarkozy claims that France needs to cut taxes by 11bn euros ($15bn; £7.5bn) and he also wants to reform higher education in order to deal with the worsening French unemployment problem.

It is reported that Nicolas Sarkozy is hoping to meet with the EU finance ministers later on Monday.

Critics of the scheme say that the move will push France's public deficit above EU guidelines, just months after it had fallen below the 3% limit, and Nicolas Sarkozy’s proposal has already drawn opposition from Germany and Portugal.
