There have been claims that superfoods can protect against serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, but some nutrition experts state there is no proof these assertions are true and so the labelling is misleading.
It has been reported that the new laws will be applied to all products made or sold for consumption within EU nations.
At present about 100 products have been described as superfood, and because of this, sales of foods like blueberries and spinach have soared.
Food manufacturers will, however, have just over two years to change their labelling and marketing campaigns to be allowed under the new rules.
