New EU rules to ban products labelled as superfoods
New EU rules coming into effect on Sunday will impose a ban on all food products labelled as “superfoods” unless the claim for this category can be adequately supported with proof as to why it is good for the health.

Some examples of superfoods are blueberries, salmon, spinach and soy, which have all been called this due to their nutrient content.

EU to ban superfoods labelThere have been claims that superfoods can protect against serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, but some nutrition experts state there is no proof these assertions are true and so the labelling is misleading.

It has been reported that the new laws will be applied to all products made or sold for consumption within EU nations.

At present about 100 products have been described as superfood, and because of this, sales of foods like blueberries and spinach have soared.

Food manufacturers will, however, have just over two years to change their labelling and marketing campaigns to be allowed under the new rules.
