French President Nicolas Sarkozy's party to make reforms
French President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party is going ahead with wide-ranging reforms, after claiming a majority victory in the recent parliamentary elections in France.

However, Nicolas Sarkozy's party fell far short of the predicted landslide victory that had been expected, although one reason for this was probably due to voter turnout being low, at about 60% only.

French President Nicolas SarkozyBut despite not getting the predicted landslide win, the UMP party said it nevertheless had a mandate to make changes, including tighter immigration laws, tax cuts and longer jail sentences. The majority win still gives Nicolas Sarkozy sufficient room to start pushing his reforms through parliament.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon also said the result gave Nicolas Sarkozy a strong mandate to introduce the reforms he has planned.

Political analysts have said that Nicolas Sarkozy's first task will be to work out a cabinet reshuffle.
