YouTube test new identification technology
Popular Internet video site YouTube has announced that it is about to test a new video fingerprinting technology in an effort to tackle copyright infringement problems.

The technology, which was developed by parent company Google, will be able to identify unique attributes in video clips and will help the company stop copyrighted clips from being uploaded without permission of the copyright holders.

YouTube test fingerprint technologyYouTube executive Chris Maxcy is reported to have said that the tool would be tested in a month's time.

Breach of copyright has been an ongoing problem for YouTube, and in March, the media company Viacom launched a lawsuit against YouTube for $1bn (£507m) for copyright infringement.

YouTube, in its defense, had denied the charges and vowed to take a tough line on copyright violation, which it is now about to honour its word on.

Apparently, the technology will be tested with a number of partners, including Disney and Time Warner, and if successful, the identification tools would be made available to any copyright owners later on this year.
