When Paris Hilton was originally sentenced to 45 days she had been informed there was no prospect of early release but this was later reduced by half for good behaviour, however, the sentence has now reverted to the original number of days.
Paris Hilton must now complete her punishment "confined to her home", has to wear an ankle bracelet and is not allowed out for social functions.
Steve Whitmore of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department explained: "After extensive consultation with medical personnel, it was decided this reassignment should be done," and he added that she had officially served five days in jail - including late on Sunday night and the early hours of Thursday morning.
Questions have been raised by the press and public alike as to whether the authorities let her out so early because of her celebrity status, and whether Paris Hilton had feigned illness because she was so upset by having to spend time in prison.
