French Open defeat for tennis star Tim Henman
British tennis star Tim Henman was defeated at the French Open singles when he lost 6-4 6-3 6-2 to Latvian player Ernests Gulbis in the first round.

Tim Henman, 32, who is British number two but who has dropped to 53rd in the world, was never able to take control of the game against Ernests Gulbis, 18, ranked 84th and who was making his Grand Slam debut.

Ernests Gulbis gave a very impressive performance and broke in the 10th game to go into the lead one set up. Then after breaking again in the second, Tim Henman managed a brief comeback break of his own in the third, but Ernests Gulbis was the better player and claimed victory.

This defeat at the French Open is yet another setback for Tim Henman who has won just once in a disappointing season marred by injuries, but despite problems, he isn’t planning on retiring just yet.

"It would be easy to throw in the towel but it does not enter my mind," Tim Henman is reported to have said after the game.
