At 17 Jordin Sparks is the youngest American Idol winner
Jordin Sparks, who is aged just 17 and comes from Glendale, Arizona, has become the youngest ever winner of the very popular US television talent show American Idol.

Jordin Sparks defeated Blake Lewis, 25, in the final in the series of American Idol, which received a record 74 million telephone votes.

Veteran singing legend Smokey Robinson, who also performed on American Idol, praised Jordin Sparks and said: "She sings so good, it's hard to believe that she's 17."

Judge Simon Cowell had tipped Jordin Sparks to win after she sang This Is Now, which had been picked by viewers in an online American Idol songwriting contest.

Recording stars Gwen Stefani, Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Green Day and Gladys Knight also gave performances on American Idol.

Jordin Sparks thanked her family for their support in winning American Idol.
