Polls suggest Nicolas Sarkozy’s UMP party may win 40% of the vote, which would mean an absolute majority in the French national assembly.
Further the polls suggest that the UMP could get at least 365 of the chamber's 577 seats, which is many more than their opponents from the Socialist party. Bearing this in mind, Socialist Party leader Francois Hollande warned supporters that an overwhelming majority for the UMP would put all power in the hands of Nicolas Sarkozy.
Nicolas Sarkozy wants to encourage overtime, to cut taxes, trim down the state sector and make reforms to the current system of unemployment benefits and pensions, and he wants to get on with his reform programme as quickly as possible.
