France shocked after girls' suicide pact
French police are investigating the suicide of two teenage girls who tied themselves together and leapt from the 17th floor of a tower block in Paris. The girls, identified as Marion and Virginie and both 14, shared a taste for Gothic music and had been inseparable since they first became friends at the start of the new school year.

Friends said the girls were obsessed by talk of death, and the weblog kept by one of the girls contained long and morbid extracts from the lyrics of a leading French black metal band, Anorexia Nervosa. "Both of them talked all the time about death and how they were going to kill themselves," said one girl.

They left school on Friday and went to a friend's flat in Ivry-sur-Seine, Paris. They shut themselves in a bedroom, telling the friend and another boy to wait. "They told us they were preparing a surprise for us," one of the boys told Le Parisien. "When they called out for us to enter, they were standing on the window ledge and jumped. There was nothing we could do." A suicide note was found in one of their pockets. It read: "Life isn't worth it."

Teen suicide is becoming more common every year in France. In fact, only car accidents kill more people between the age of 15 and 24. The story has provoked many French people to complain about the content of black metal and death metal songs, alleging that their violent and death-obsessed lyrics can tip the sensitive into self-destruction.
