Nicolas Sarkozy is the new French president
Right-wing candidate Nicolas Sarkozy won the most votes in the election of a new president for France and gained a clear 53% victory over his Socialist rival Segolene Royal.

Nicolas Sarkozy, 52, takes over officially from Jacques Chirac on 16 May and he has already promised to boost the French economy by creating jobs, liberalising employment laws, getting tough on crime and controlling immigration.

Nicolas SarkozyBefore he starts his new five-year term of office, aides say that Nicolas Sarkozy will be spending a few days resting at a secret location where he will be finalising his government’s line-up and the priorities for its policies. Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to very soon name a 15-strong cabinet.

Nicolas Sarkozy announced that Francois Fillon, who is currently his senior political adviser. Would be his choice as the French prime minister.

But not everyone was happy with the election results and there were reports of some minor clashes with protesters in Paris and some other cities when Nicolas Sakozy was announced as the new president of France.
