Segolene Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy battle for last votes in France
Segolene Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy the two remaining candidates hoping to win the French presidential election have both been making jibes against each other on a final day of campaigning before Sunday's run-off election.

Socialist hopeful Segolene Royal, 53, is reported to have said that if the voters choose Nicolas Sarkozy, 52, it could spark riots and violence.

A poll for the Le Monde newspaper put Nicolas Sarkozy at 53%, whilst Segolene Royal was behind him with 47%.

The campaigns by the two candidates end on Friday and the voting in some overseas French areas is held on the next day.

Segolene Royal held a rally in Lille in the north on Thursday, whilst Nicolas Sarkozy held his own at the other end of France in Montpellier.

A TV debate between Nicolas Sarkozy and Segolene Royal on Wednesday, which was watched by approximately 23m people, left both candidates claiming victory, although polls showed that Sarkozy was the one still in the lead.
