Former France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez quits Nantes
Former France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has announced that he is resigning from playing for Nantes ever again following an attack by fans on the weekend after his team lost to Rennes 2-0.

Fabien Barthez, 35, was attacked by fans that kicked his car as he made his way out of the Beaujoire stadium football grounds.

Fabien BarthezOne of the fans made an attempt to open Fabien Barthez’s car door, which resulted in him getting out to remonstrate with the attacker. This escalated into a tussle, which was broken up when security staff intervened.

Fabien Barthez is reported to have stated on French radio: "I will not play for Nantes again,"

"This has got nothing to do with football. I no longer feel safe there and it's better for me to leave."

In January 2007, Fabien Barthez, who has played for Manchester United, had made a return to football from retirement in a bid to help Nantes but this has not had the desired affect and Nantes are now bottom of Ligue 1.
