Paris court fines fashion designer John Galliano for plagiarism
A Paris judge has fined British fashion designer John Galliano and his company and ordered them to pay 200,000 euros in damages to American photographer William Klein for plagiarising his artwork in an advertising campaign.

William Klein, who lives in France, was "furious" at John Galliano's use of some of his half-painted photographs of street scenes in advertisements the designer had placed in fashion magazines.

British fashion designer John GallianoWilliam Klein said the copying of his work was "gross plagiary" and exclaimed: "I am insulted and furious".

William Klein's giant versions of contact sheets were painted over in coloured enamel to highlight particular images, and are a hallmark of his work. The Paris court decided that John Galliano's use of imagery was against the law in the absence of authorisation from William Klein.

The Paris judge ordered John Galliano to pay 150,000 euros as compensation for the abuse of William Klein's rights as author and 50,000 euros in damages because of the poor quality of the copied work.

John Galliano and his company are appealing against the verdict and sentence.
