FDA failure claim by PETA over Menu Foods contamination
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) claim that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may have failed to discover the real source of contamination in the recalled Menu Foods items that have caused sickness and deaths in countless cats and dogs.

Wheat gluten had been identified and said to be the reason the pet foods were a danger but complaints about sick and dying animals who ate only dry food have been mounting up, and the fact that these dry foods did not contain wheat gluten strongly suggest that another ingredient is causing the problem.

Menu FoodsLaboratory evidence shows that an excessive amount of vitamin D in pet food may be to blame for the illnesses and deaths. Vitamin D in overdose produces symptoms similar to those seen in sick or dying animals who had eaten only dry foods.

PETA has requested the FDA to refocus its investigations beyond wheat gluten and consider other possible contaminants and to make sure that in future all available pet food is 100 percent safe for dogs and cats.

PETA has also called on FDA commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach to resign because of the FDA’s mishandling of the recent pet food crisis.

PETA claim that by not exercising its mandate and siding with Menu Foods and companies like Iams, the FDA has betrayed the public trust in it as an efficient organisation.
