Besides Elton John having just turned 60, it was his 60th appearance at the Madison Square Garden venue, and as was fitting for the occasion he performed his hit Sixty Years On.
President Bill Clinton said: "Thank you for coming tonight to help celebrate Elton joining my favourite club, the 60-year-olds' club."
Sir Elton John, who was born Reg Dwight in north London, said he had known for several years what he wanted to do when he reached 60 and this was it.
Amongst Sir Elton John’s celebrity guests were American actress and rock singer Bette Midler, model Elizabeth Hurley, Italian designer Donatella Versace, actor Pierce Brosnan and British heavy metal rocker, Ozzy Osbourne.
