5.5 million people short of water in drought-stricken China
Ongoing extreme drought in southwestern China has left more than 5.5 million people short of drinking water, reports say.

In the province of Sichuan Chinese officials have had to to deliver water to the most badly affected areas and the governor of the province said that six million livestock and half a million hectares of land are affected by the drought.

Droughts continue in southwestern ChinaMost of Sichuan received scant or no rainfall in February, and there is no rain forecast before the end of March.

Abnormally warm temperatures have added to the problem that has hit Chinese farmers there, and there have been reported losses of nearly 300 million yuan ($38m, £19m), according to the official Xinhua news agency.

It is not just Sichuan that is experiencing extreme problems because other parts of China have had abnormal weather conditions recently as well, for example, in the Chinese northwest hundreds of thousands of people needed emergency supplies earlier this year due to very low rainfall in Shaanxi province.
