The prosecution set forth its basic arguments during pre-trial hearings, claiming that Phil Spector deliberately placed a weapon in the mouth of Lana Clarkson, and also suggested that the music producer had previously threatened women with guns.
Phil Spector came to fame with his pioneering "Wall of Sound" technique, employed on hit songs by the Ronettes and the Righteous Brothers, amongst other world famous acts.
One of Phil Spector's lawyers said the defence would be a straightforward case of saying that Phil Spector "didn't shoot this woman," and added that: "Everything in this case is consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound."
Phil Spector has been out on $1m (£510,000) bail, however, if he is found guilty of the murder of Lana Clarkson he could face life imprisonment.
