National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen to run in poll in France
Jean-Marie Le Pen the leader of the National Front far-right party in France has collected the 500 signatures he requires to run in April's presidential election, it has been reported. Jean-Marie Le Pen will be submitting the signatures he needed to the Constitutional Council himself on Wednesday.

Every candidate for the election must have the support of at least 500 elected officials to stand. The majority of the 42,000 elected officials that are eligible to sign are mayors from small French towns.

Jean-Marie Le PenInterior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy had said that he wanted both the far right and the far left to run in the 22 April poll, however, until recently far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen of the National Front and Olivier Besancenot of the Communist Revolutionary League on the far left, were both having trouble collecting enough signatures.

Recent polls show that Nicolas Sarkozy who is the centre-right candidate, is just holding the lead over his Socialist rival, Segolene Royal.
