Marvel Entertainment’s comic superhero Captain America has been killed off after being a popular character for 66 years.

Captain America was created in 1941 to help increase patriotism during World War II and his co-creator Joe Simon is reported to have told the New York Daily News: "It's a hell of a time for him to go, We really need him now."

Captain AmericaBut it’s not all over for the superhero just yet because Marvel Entertainment say they are creating a film based on Captain America and the comic's editor-in-chief, Joe Quesada, won’t confirm that there is no hope for him being resurrected in the future.

The latest and last edition of Captain America shows the comic superhero, who has been fatally wounded by a sniper’s gun, dying on the steps of a courthouse in New York.

Marvel Entertainment has sold more than 200 million copies of Captain America magazine in as many as 75 countries, which goes to show what a popular superhero he was.
