Fake professor who edits Wikipedia causes stir for the Internet site
One of the prominent editors of the Internet site Wikipedia, known as Essjay, has been exposed as having a false identity complete with fake PhD, and he had falsely described himself as a professor of religion at a private university.

Ryan Jordan, 24, was in reality, a college student from Kentucky who used texts such as Catholicism for Dummies to help him carry on with his deception, although now he has been found out he has retired from the site and his ability to work as an editor of the site has been stopped.

WikipediaRyan Jordan claimed in his user profile to have taught both undergraduate and graduate theology, and in an interview with the New Yorker in July 2006, was said to be a "tenured professor of religion".

Last week, however, the New Yorker, seeking to set matters straight, added an editorial note explaining the deception, which read: "At the time of publication, neither we nor Wikipedia knew Essjay's real name."

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales said on the site that Mr Jordan was apologetic, but despite their policy of forgiveness asked that Ryan Jordan should hand in his resignation.

The following day, Ryan Jordan announced he was leaving Wikipedia.
