TV appearance for French Socialist candidate Segolene Royal
In an appearance on television in France in the programme I Have a Question to Ask You, French Socialist candidate Segolene Royal promised more help for low earners, such as pensioners who earn less than the minimum wage.

Segolene Royal was hoping to boost her ratings for the presidential election in April and she focused on plans to raise wages and create jobs saying: "I will be the president who will battle against youth unemployment."

It appears that Segolene Royal is hoping to revive her campaign after a series of problems but the French papers agreed it was a solid but disappointing performance, which wont have done much to help her chances in the election.

Opinion polls published just hours before Segolene Royal’s TV appearance showed that less than a quarter of people intended to vote for her in the first round of the ballot, however, Ms Royal played down her current poor showing, saying we still have plenty of time before the election.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the main centre-right candidate is ahead of Segolene Royal by 10 points.
