Gary Glitter’s jail sentence reduced by three months
Under a national amnesty, former pop singer Gary Glitter has had his three-year jail sentence for child molestation in Vietnam reduced by three months.

Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was last year found guilty of sexually abusing two Vietnamese girls.

Gary GlitterTran Thi Thien Huong, a judge on the panel that made the decision, explained that this means that Gary Glitter will now be released from prison in August 2008.

In Vietnam there is a tradition of reducing the sentences of inmates with good records as part of a nationwide Lunar New Year jail amnesty and Gary Glitter could have had his sentence reduced by up to half under this.

The three judges on the panel that made the decision about Gary Glitter said they had to balance his good behaviour in prison with the seriousness of the crimes he was serving his sentence for.

It has been reported that Christine Beddoe, director of child protection group Ecpat UK, was "disappointed" that Gary Glitter's sentence had been reduced at all.
