Back in 1998, the iMac was created without a floppy disk drive and in 2003, Dell stopped including disk drives in higher spec machines.
Commenting on the floppy disk’s demise, Bryan Magrath, commercial director of PC World said: "The floppy disk looks increasingly quaint and simply isn't able to compete."
The first floppy disk was introduced in 1971 by IBM and years later in its heyday back in 1998, around 2 billion floppy disks were sold, according to the Recording Media Industries Association of Japan, however, since then demand has dropped to an estimated 700 million by 2006.
Today’s computer users are increasingly using USB memory sticks, which can store 2,000 times more data than the floppy disk.
