Pfizer will be closing three research sites in Michigan, which employ some 2,300 people, and two factories in the United States, as well as others in Japan and France.
Two manufacturing plants in New York and Nebraska are earmarked for closure.
The New York factory employs 600 people but only 25 jobs will be lost in Nebraska.
Pfizer claim that the Michigan employees will be offered alternative jobs.
Pfizer also said it would cut 20 percent of its European sales force but hasn’t revealed how many people work for it there.
