Violent storms cause deaths and chaos in Europe
Violent storms that have battered Britain and northern Europe are reported to have killed as many as 17 people and widespread travel chaos and much destruction have been caused where the storms have hit.

The UK has come off the worst so far with nine people dead as rain and gale-force gusts of wind up to 99mph (159km/h) swept the nation.

StormHurricane-force winds that struck Germany have killed at least three people and further deaths have been reported in the Netherlands and France.

Falling trees killed two men in Great Britain. Richard Heard, 54, one of the two, died on his way to work as the managing director of Birmingham Airport when a tree branch crashed into his windscreen on the B4373 near Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

In southwestern Germany another man died when he crashed into another vehicle as he tried to avoid a fallen tree.

In Bavaria, a 73-year-old man was killed when he was hit by debris and in Munich, an18-month-old child was crushed by a door that had been blown off its hinges and died as a result.

Falling trees killed another three people in the Netherlands, and another person was killed the same way in Roubaix, France.

The severe weather has caused hundreds of flight, rail and ferry cancellations and many roads and schools have had to be closed.

The German national rail company, Deutsche Bahn, was forced to call a halt to all its services late on Thursday.
