Wild bird trade to be banned by European Union
The European Union is going to ban the trade in wild birds starting in July, EU animal health officials have announced.

Animal welfare campaigners are delighted with the news and say the permanent ban will save millions of birds, including many species that are endangered.

European UnionOnly captive-bred birds from approved countries will be let into the EU and tighter controls on the health and quarantine of imported birds are going to be imposed as well.

Campaigners have blamed the European trade in wild birds as a major cause of the decline in numbers of many endangered species such as the African grey parrot.

About 60% of the nearly 1.7 million birds caught for import died before they got to Europe due to poor handling or disease, Britain's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds claimed.

The new permanent ban will replace a temporary ban imposed by Brussels in 2005.
