France wants to help regions affected by Katrina HurricaneOn September 2nd France's foreign ministry announced some details of help for the southern states of America that were affected by the devastating hurricane Katrina. The assistance is going to cover air and naval support. Ms Villepin said that the French were ready to help Americans in many ways including the use of civil rescue facilities based in the West Indies. France is waiting for a response from the American side and a statement released by the White House said that US would accept offers of support from abroad and the American spokesman, Scott McClellan said "We are open to all offers of assistance from other nations, and I would expect that we would take people up on offers of assistance when it's necessary."
France has already collected some means of support such as eight aircraft, including two already in the area, two ships and a 20-man team of military medical experts as well as 600 tents, 1000 camp beds, 60 generators, three water treatment plants, and 1000 jerry cans. Furthermore, an interior ministry team consisting of 35 people including 11 hurricane specialists is ready to help the Americans. As far as human sources are concerned France also wants to provide Katrina's victims with a 60-man airborne team.
Some non-governmental organizations, such as the Telecoms Without Borders or water company Veolia also wish to provide some support by repairing telecommunications and water networks in parts of the US affected by Katrina.
The hurricane has already caused the death of many people and there are still thousands trapped in New Orleans and Louisiana. So far there are no reports of French casualties but the scale of the disaster is enormous and cannot fail to touch international feelings. President Jacques Chirac on Wednesday sent a letter to George W Bush expressing his sadness in connection with the disastrous Hurricane Katrina.
