Pop singer Pink boycotts Australian wool
The Australian government has answered back to American pop star Pink's boycott of the country's wool.

Pink is protesting at the practice of "mulesing", or cutting flesh from lambs' rear ends without anaesthetic, and she said it was "sadistic" however, Australian Treasurer Peter Costello said it stopped sheep dying of maggot infestations and was done humanely.

Pop singer Pink boycotts Australian wool"Sheep are at risk of being fly-blown and dying... it's not a pretty sight," he said. "Mulesing is not a pretty sight either but it's a damn sight more humane than letting a sheep die fly-blown in a paddock."

Pink says that Australian sheep farmers are cruel in a video she's made for animal rights action group People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) and the video on the Peta website shows lambs undergoing mulesing, which is an illegal practice in the UK.

Pink and PETA argue that humane alternatives to mulesing exist, but Australian farmers say it is necessary to stop many slow and painful deaths.

Australian actress Toni Collette and Pretenders rock singer Chrissie Hynde have previously campaigned with PETA to end mulesing as well.
