Banned airlines lists published in France and BelgiumFrance has published a blacklist of airlines forbidden from their territory following five crashes in the past months including one in Venezuela on Aug. 16 of a Medellin, Colombia-based West Caribbean Airways plane that killed all 160 people aboard, including 152 French tourists.
The blacklist is to be found on the websites of the French civil aviation authority (DGAC). In addition to the list of banned airlines, the DGAC site also published a list of authorised companies including charter airlines.
European Union countries have separate safety policies on approving airlines for serving their countries, and a carrier blacklisted in one country isn't necessarily banned elsewhere in the EU. The French decision comes ahead of a decision by the European Union on the case. It wants to issue by the end of the year a list compiled by the 25 member states that would show all banned airlines. It is still unclear whether agreement on the blacklists is possible, while Italy is calling for just a list of safe companies.
Belgium has also published a separate list of airlines banned from their territory and Switzerland is going to provide its own list on Thursday, Sept.1. French list of banned airlines:
- Air Koryo, North Korea
- Air Saint-Thomas, US Virgin Islands
- International Air Service, Liberia
- Air Mozambique (LAM), including its subsidiary Transairways
- Phuket Airlines, Thailand
Belgian list of banned airlines:

- Air Memphis, Egypt
- Air Van Airlines, Armenia
- Central Air Express, Democratic Republic of Congo
- ICTTPW, Libya
- International Air Tours Ltd., Nigeria
