Sir Elton John criticises Australian PM John Howard
Rock star Sir Elton John has criticised Australian Prime Minister John Howard's attitude to gay marriage.

On an Australian tour, Elton John was asked if he had a message for John Howard, whose government had overruled a local law allowing gay unions in June.

"Up yours!" replied Sir Elton, who had "married" his partner David Furnish in a civil ceremony last year.

Gay marriage has recently been high on the political agenda in Australia and the Australian Capital Territory became the first area of the country to legally recognise gay relationships when it voted on it in May, however, many members of Mr Howard's conservative government didn't agree with the change, and the law became invalidated due to this.

And attorney General Philip Ruddock claimed that federal law clearly stated that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Prime Minister Howard denied that the move was homophobic and said that it was more a question of preserving marriage as an institution with "special character".
