US President George W. Bush announces Donald Rumsfeld to resign
American President George W. Bush has announced the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld at presss conference this afternoon and said that Rumsfeld had agreed with him that it was time for a change.

A senior administration official also confirmed this news shortly before the briefing started, and indicated that after six years at the Pentagon, Donald Rumsfeld had written out his resignation.

"Why all the glum faces?" George Bush asked at the start of the media conference, before admitting his disappointment at his party's loss of the House and possible loss of the Senate. However, the President went on to promise a "new era of co-operation," with Democrats, and claimed that a Democratic majority will not mean a hasty pull-out from Iraq. "To our enemies," he said, "do not be joyful."

George Bush said Robert Gates, who was the former head of the CIA under the first President Bush, would be replacing Donald Rumsfeld.
