Britney Spears and Kevin Federline file for divorce

Pop singer Britney Spears and husband, Kevin Federline, who is a rapper, have filed for divorce, according to court officials in Los Angeles. "Irreconcilable differences" were given as reasons for the divorce.

Britney Spears, 24, who married 28-year-old Kevin Federline in 2004, will be seeking custody of their two children, court papers say. She gave birth to her first child by Federline - Sean Preston - last year.

The couple announced the birth of their second child - Jayden James Federline - in the divorce paper, in September.
Britney Spears's previous marriage to Jason Alexander was annulled only two days after the couple wed in Las Vegas in 2004.

Kevin Federline has two children by his former partner, television actress Shar Jackson.

Britney Spears's and Kevin Federline's marriage has been the focus of much media debate for months, with repeated reports the couple were planning to divorce and now it is official.
