Erotic paintings at the Lupanare in Pompeii viewed by queuing tourists
Hundreds of eager tourists have been queuing in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, to enter to one of the city's most extravagant brothels where they can view erotic fresco paintings. The 2,000-year-old Lupanare building has been re-opened after a costly restoration.

Lupanare is derived from the Latin word "lupa" for prostitute and the building is regarded as one of Pompeii's most popular attractions.

Pompeii, which is by the slopes of Mount Vesuvius near Naples, was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in AD79, however, the eruption helped preserve the city, showing insights into how the Romans lived at the time.

At that period, prostitution was not illegal and sex workers were often slaves, with many coming from Greece.

The erotic frescoes are painted above each door of the two-storey brothel and are thought to suggest the prostitute's speciality in sex services and archaeologists say that they charged clients the equivalent of the price of eight glasses of red wine.
