Online gaming firm Sportingbet sell American business for $1
Online gaming company Sportingbet has sold most of its American business for only $1 (53p) just hours before a law is passed outlawing internet gambling across the nation.

Sportingbet has sold its US sports betting and casino businesses to Jazette Enterprises for the trifling sum of money.

GamblingPresident George Bush is due to sign into law a new act making it a crime to accept proceeds from online gaming.

Sportingbet has had to review its American business ever since its former chairman Peter Dicks was arrested in September.

Mr Dicks has since been released and the arrest was part of a series of moves made by the authorities in an effort to discourage online gambling operators.

State officials in Louisiana had issued a warrant accusing him of "gambling by computer" however a New York court refused to sanction Mr Dicks being extradited to Louisiana.

American lawmakers surprised the gambling industry when they agreed sweeping measures criminalizing the transfer and handling of proceeds from online gambling earlier on this month.
